New Mexico community groups launch Respect NM Women

ALBUQUERQUE, NM—As restrictions on access to reproductive healthcare are introduced during the 2016 Legislative session, community groups have come together to launch the Respect New Mexico Women campaign to elevate the voices of New Mexican women and their families who believe access to reproductive healthcare including abortion must be protected. After a successful campaign in 2013 to defeat a harmful ballot measure in Albuquerque that would have banned abortion later in pregnancy, we have continued to work towards our goal of keeping abortion safe, legal, and accessible. Respect NM Women will serve as a platform through which women can engage with their community about issues impacting reproductive healthcare.

“New Mexicans understand women and families need access to a full range of pregnancy related healthcare, including abortion. New Mexico remains a place where women in our communities and across the country can access safe and legal healthcare their families need. We are proud to be part of Respect NM Women-a network of hermanas, ninos, tias, mothers, neighbors, providers, and advocates working together to maintain and grow access to reproductive healthcare for our families,” said Tannia Esparza, Executive Director, Young Women United.

“New Mexico has long been a place where women from our communities could safely and legally have an abortion, and that must continue. While other states have enacted hundreds of anti-abortion laws, New Mexico has remained a place where a woman’s decision to end a pregnancy is respected and protected,” said Erin Armstrong, Reproductive Rights Attorney for ACLU of New Mexico.

“Volunteers from the New Mexico Religious Coalition for Choice support women who have made the decision to have an abortion because the compassion of their faith and respect for compels them to do so. As both clergy and people of faith, the New Mexico Religious Coalition for Choice is proud to join the Respect NM Women network to protect access to abortion care in our state,” said Joan Lamunyon Sanford, Executive Director of New Mexico Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

“These bills are just one more tactic to an overall strategy to do away with access to abortion all together. Texas jurists stood bravely against these tactics just this week sending a clear message that misleading information to no longer be tolerated when it comes to abortion. This legislation and tactics like it are not what New Mexican families need or want. New Mexicans have spoken clearly that they want continued access to reproductive healthcare,” said Vicki Cowart, CEO of Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains.

"Respect New Mexico Women reminds us that New Mexicans are capable of making their own decisions about if, when, and how they will parent. Respect NM Women will allow us to connect, share, mobilize and prove once again that politicians have no place in our personal and family decisions," Adriann Barboa, Field Director of Strong Families NM.
