Medical Providers Call on New Mexicans to Respect a Woman’s Private Decisions about Abortion

More than 50 New Mexican medical providers run full page ads in three papers calling for respect for a woman’s private medical decisions

NEW MEXICO—Today, 58 New Mexico medical providers called on New Mexicans to respect a woman’s private decisions about abortion in an open letter run in the Albuquerque Journal, Santa Fe New Mexican, and Las Cruces Sun News. The ads are part of the Respect New Mexico Women campaign, a statewide effort to protect access to reproductive healthcare and end the shame and stigma surrounding abortion.

“Medical providers are the people we trust to help us get the care we need and are an essential part of our communities,” said ACLU of New Mexico Field Organizer Alanna Offield, who worked with the signers to place the print ads. “They understand that deeply personal decisions about abortion belong between a woman, her family, and her medical provider—no one else. Medical providers are tired of politicians and extremists attempting to interfere in these private decisions, and have chosen to stand up and demand respect for their patients.”

The full page ads feature excerpts from a statement of support hosted at

“We, medical providers from across New Mexico, draw upon our medical training and expertise to support a woman’s ability to access a full range of reproductive health services, including abortion. We recognize that the decision to have an abortion is deeply personal and should be left to a woman and her family in consultation with her medical provider. Our code of ethics is grounded in providing the best care possible to our patients. We believe deeply in ending the shame and stigma associated with abortion and increasing access for all women to a full range of reproductive healthcare options. New Mexico has a long history of valuing and protecting the dignity of all women. It is time to leave decisions about abortion in the hands of a woman, her family, and her medical providers.”

The signers of the letter come from communities throughout New Mexico and include registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, medical students, therapists, certified nurse midwifes, and other medical professionals.
